A story to share:

Almost a month ago, Dr. Barry Butler had the opportunity to experience the world of cattle showing.  He joined Brady Edge, West Branch in showing at the Governor Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair. Here is what he had to say about his experience.

A First-timers Experience Walking a Steer

Barry Butler

Growing up in a military family, I lived many places in my youth --- New Jersey, Bermuda, Washington DC, Illinois, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and a suburb of New York City. I was lucky enough to experience many different parts of the world, but never had the opportunity to live on a farm. So, when asked to serve as a celebrity showman for the 2016 Governor’s Charity Steer Show, I knew I’d be a little out of my comfort zone. Actually, a lot out of my comfort zone. However, given the outstanding work the show does in raising funds for the Ronald McDonald Houses, I didn’t hesitate to say yes. In advance of the big show, I was able to get a few lessons on the task ahead of me. The Carter boys from Washington were very helpful in getting me comfortable with walking a 1,400 pound animal. Then a week later, I met “Jake” my steer and Jake’s owner, Brady Edge from West Branch. Brady and his father Joel were very helpful at teaching me the finer points of steer showing – leg position, back posture, etc. With confidence, and Brady at my side, I confidently walked a very well-groomed Jake before a couple thousand spectators at the State Fair. While I didn’t walk away with a ribbon, I came to appreciate the hard work and commitment young people devote to raising and showing their animals.

The Cedar County Fair Board and Association wish to thank Dr. Barry Butler, Executive VP and Provost of the University of Iowa, for taking the time to give us a glimpse of his experience.  We also wish to thank Brady Edge, “Jake”, and the Jake Team for representing Cedar County at the 2016 Iowa State Fair and giving Dr. Butler a little confidence and education on farm life.
